Obituary

Dorothy "Jackie" Bielefeld Dorothy J. Bielefeld, 94 died on November 10, 2014 with her family by her side at her son's home in Weston, WI. Dorothy Amelia was born on December 1, 1919 in Avoca, NY to Arthur Ward and Ida Eldora (Rynders) Jackman. She grew up in Avoca with her younger sister, Marian. Dorothy loved Marian and shared a close relationship with her that lasted throughout their lives. In 1938, Jackie graduated from Avoca High School and attended the State University of New York at Geneseo. During college Jackie worked at the Milne Library on campus. This activity, in combination with lifetime love of reading was integral to her decision to earn a Bachelor's Degree in Library Science in 1942. Later, Dorothy was awarded a Master's Degree in elementary education at the College of Saint Rose (Albany, NY). On July 27, 1943, Dorothy married Robert H. Bielefeld in chapel at Keesler Army Airfield (Biloxi, MS). They had been high school sweethearts prior to Robert's enlistment in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. This event initiated an adventurous journey that lasted 67 years. Dorothy spent 20 years teaching kindergarten at Westmere Elementary School in the Guilderland Central School District (NY). She loved her students and enjoyed helping them make the transition between home and school. Many of those children returned over the years thankful for Dorothy's guidance and enthusiasm. In retirement, Dorothy volunteered at the Brewster Ladies' Library (MA) and participated in the Dennis-Yarmouth Women's Club and Cape Cod Civil War Roundtable. She and Robert were among the founding members of Northside United Methodist Church (Brewster, MA). When community projects required kindness and determined effort, Dorothy was a good choice. Dorothy joyously surrounded her home with flowers and found time to travel in Europe.
