Frank Terhune
Copenhaver
May 25, 1945 — Oct 21, 2026
Amherst Junction
Frank Terhune Copenhaver passed away on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at the age of 81.
Frank was born on May 25, 1945, in North Woodstock, New Hampshire, to Dr. Leslie B. Copenhaver and Rosemary Copenhaver. The youngest of four children, he grew up alongside his three sisters, Marcia (Col. Richard) Barrere, Nancy (Dr. Neill) Macaulay, and Joanne (Dr. William) Walsh.
In 1967, Frank earned his degree in education from Parsons College in Fairfield, Iowa. Following graduation, he began his career as a physical education teacher in Wausau, Wisconsin.
On November 4, 1972, Frank married the love of his life, Irma Neece, in North Woodstock, New Hampshire. Together, they built a life centered on family, friendship, and shared passions, creating countless cherished memories throughout their years together.
Frank and Irma were blessed with two children, Aaron Copenhaver (Jenny Thompson) and Jane Curran (Copenhaver) (Glenn Curran III). His grandsons, Zander Copenhaver, Ryan Curran, and Jack Curran, held a special place in his heart. Frank loved sharing his passions for hunting, fishing, and the outdoors with them, and passing down traditions that will be forever treasured.
Frank dedicated 34 years to teaching physical education in the Wausau School District. His passion for teaching extended beyond the classroom, as he coached elementary school sports and enjoyed officiating games alongside Irma. He was instrumental in establishing outdoor education opportunities at the Wausau School Forest, sharing his knowledge and appreciation of nature with generations of students. Frank also taught firearm safety and, alongside others, helped establish a youth trapshooting program at the Wausau Skeet and Trap Club, where he remained an active member for many years.
A love for the outdoors was a defining part of Frank’s life. He was a supporter of Rib Mountain Bowmen, serving on its Board of Directors for several years. Whether hunting, fishing, or spending even the hottest summer days bowfishing, Frank was happiest outdoors. He generously shared his knowledge and passion with others, fostering traditions and friendships that extended throughout the community.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Leslie B. Copenhaver and Rosemary Copenhaver; his parents-in-law, Vincent and Maxine Neece; his sister-in-law, Patty Neece; and his brothers-in-law, Col. Richard Barrere, Dr. Neill Macaulay, and Dr. William Walsh.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Irma; his children, Aaron Copenhaver (Jenny Thompson) and Jane Curran (Copenhaver) (Glenn Curran III); his grandsons, Zander Copenhaver, Ryan Curran, and Jack Curran; his sisters, Marcia Barrere, Nancy Macaulay, and Joanne Walsh; his sister-in-law, Lora Taylor, and her husband, Kenny; and many extended family.
A celebration of Frank’s life will be held at a later date, when family and friends can come together to honor and remember him.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family, who will direct them to charities chosen in Frank’s memory.
