Harlen Victor
Ward
Apr 16, 1938 — Jul 31, 2024
Beloved father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Harlen Victor Ward passed away peacefully on July 31, 2024 at the age of 86. Born on April 16, 1938, to Herbert Victor Ward and Floy (Braatz) in Amherst Junction, his life was filled with love, laughter, and countless adventures.
Harlen lived and worked in the Amherst area until moving to Milwaukee where he was employed by Oilgear and completed an apprenticeship in hydraulics in 1957. He married Colette Trzebiatowski in 1959 and they returned to Amherst in 1973 when they purchased and operated Ward's Place, filling a decade with unforgettable memories. Although the marriage ended, they remained friends and over the years enjoyed many holidays and family celebrations together watching their family grow. After selling the bar, Harlen established and operated Ward's Hydraulics & Pneumatics serving Amherst and the surrounding communities until finally retiring at age 77.
Harlen was a passionate outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, birdwatching, and gardening throughout his life. He also enjoyed collecting classic cars, watching the Packers and NASCAR races and taking road trips to the casino. Harlen was a loyal and generous friend to many. He lived his life with enthusiasm and a hint of mischief, always able to make you smile. Those who knew Harlen best will remember his sense of humor, which he never lost, and he continued to crack jokes and make us laugh until we said goodbye. While he will be deeply missed, his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Harlen is survived by his two cherished daughters, Val (Brent Parker) Ward and Vicki (Steve Henske) Ward. He was a proud grandfather to Nikki (Travis) Konkol and found great joy watching his great-grandchildren, Keira, Emmett, Brigham, and Quinton, grow up. Harlen was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
A Celebration of Harlan/Harlen's Life will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2024 from 11am until 3pm at the Jensen Community Center, 487. N Main Street, Amherst, WI 54406.
Harlen's family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Portage County Health Care Center and Heartland Hospice for their compassionate care, comfort, and support during his final days.
