Janice (Jan) Campfield, 86, passed away peacefully on September 26, 2024, at Marshfield Clinic Hospital in Weston, Wisconsin. Jan was born November 28, 1937, to Helen (McGlinn) and Roy Schmidt. After her birth she lived in Winchester (Vilas County), Wisconsin with her parents until she was 20. Jan then moved to Wausau and worked at The Hotel Wausau where she met and later married Edward Campfield. After her son Todd was born, she became a fulltime mother and homemaker. In 1962, when her husband Ed opened and ran the Holiday Inn of Wausau she became his indispensable support. In later years, Jan managed The Beowulf Lodge in Door County and for 12 years managed Lake Pointe Apartments in Schofield. After she retired, she lived with her son Todd while they remodeled their home "The 1909 Dancy SchoolHouse" in Dancy, Wisconsin.
Jan's warm, loving smile and personality was shared with everyone she knew. Her love of music was evident throughout her life. She enjoyed singing with her sisters in the family kitchen during the holiday gatherings and playing her guitar. She and her sister Sally spent many hours camping on islands at the Flowage. Jan, husband Ed, and son Todd spent many fun-filled weekends at their cottage in Rhinelander. Her love of the out of doors was apparent through her love of all plants and animals. She planted and grew beautiful flowers both inside her home and outside where nothing else could grow. Her creativity shown through her elegant sense of fashion and the artful way she designed her home. Jan also took great pride in her beloved Saab convertible.
Janice is survived by her son Todd of Dancy, Wisconsin, brothers Robert (Sharon) Schmidt of Winchester, and Jack (Therese) of Arkansas, sister-in-law Mary (Stan) Kotschi, nieces Linda (Patrick) Hickman of Mercer, Penny Schultz, Katherine (David) Kotschi, Sara (Kolia) Kotschi, nephews William T. Scheels, Thomas Scheels, Robert (Teresa) Schmidt, Jr., Peter (Amy) Schultz, Erik (Jodi) Schultz, and Jack (Nicole) Schmidt, and several great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Jan was preceded in death by her husband Edward, parents Helen and Roy Schmidt, sisters Judy Schmidt, Sally Scheels, Rosalae Schultz, mother-in-law Hattie Campfield and father-in-law Edward Campfield, Sr., brothers-in-law William E. Scheels, Peter Schultz, Jack (Josephine) Campfield, nephew Michael Schmidt, great-nephew Matthew Hickman and great-niece Kimberly Scheels.
As per Jan's wishes, a celebration of her life will take place next summer.
