John Wayne Wallace, age 62, of Wausau, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2026. He was born on March 27, 1964, in Wausau, to the late John and Jeanette (Mogenson) Wallace.

John was a man who lived life a little differently. He enjoyed living off the grid, finding his own way and keeping life simple, but he was never far from the people he loved. Family and friends were at the center of his world, and he had a way of making those around him feel welcome and cared for.

John loved to fish and could often be found enjoying the outdoors. Music was another great love of his, especially the Grateful Dead. He was a devoted Green Bay Packers fan, enjoyed playing cards, particularly sheepshead, and an occasional trip to the casino.

John had a special way with animals—and people. He was a true dog magnet, although no one was ever quite sure if they were drawn to his personality or the treats he always seemed to have in his pocket. The same could be said for children. Kids naturally flocked to John, though the candy he carried in his pocket may have had something to do with it.

Those who knew John will remember his smile, especially the one that appeared whenever he was surrounded by his grandchildren. They will remember the care he showed for his family and friends, the laughter around the table, and the countless hours spent playing sheepshead together. John was the kind of person who remembered the important things. He never missed calling or messaging someone on their birthday or a holiday, and he never failed to attend the funeral of someone he loved. His thoughtfulness and loyalty left an impression on many lives.

John was loved by many, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

He is survived by his children, Becky, Justin, Jeremy, and Jady (Cody); many grandchildren, whom he adored; his siblings, Joe, James, and Robert; and his best friend, Jimer. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Cathy.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date. Details to be announced.
