Obituary

Robert Dayton Lamont, age 92 of Wausau, WI., peacefully left this world on September 28, 2026, to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, due to a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurism. Robert was born September 9, 1934, to Byron and Mildred (Schilling) Lamont. He was baptized into the Christian Faith on September 30 at Epiphany Lutheran Church in Eau Claire Wisconsin.

Robert graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1952, and continued his education, graduating from the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire in 1956 with a degree in vocal music and English. He began his teaching career in Menominee, MI and after 6 years, he spent 26 years as Director of Vocal Music in Kaukauna WI. Upon retirement he and his wife Irene returned to their hometown of Eau Claire WI

Robert’s love of music was nourished at an early age by singing in the children’ s choir at Epiphany Lutheran Church. He continued his pursuit of music by studying piano and singing in Junior and Senior High School choirs, and at the University of Wisconsin, and then going on to receive a master’s degree in Vocal Music at UW Stevens Point. He chose music as his vocation and avocation. Over the course of 60 plus years, in addition to his teaching career, he served as organist or church choir director in Menominee, MI, Appleton, Kaukauna, Neenah, Eau Claire and Wausau, WI.

Robert cherished the memories of his boyhood in Eau Claire; swimming in the Eau Claire River below the footbridge at the municipal swimming beach; his downtown paper route in the early 50’s; attending the E.C. Bears baseball games, growing up on the East side in a rich environment with neighborhood “chums” and a multitude of activities to whet his imagination. Although Robert was a sports enthusiast, having played football in high school and active as a golfer, bowler, muskie fisherman and devoted Green Bay Packers fan, he also had a passion for the arts, especially Opera. He and his wife of 71 years travelled extensively to New York, Chicago and Sarasota FL to hear the great voices of the operatic world.

The Lamonts moved to Wausau WI in 2016 to be closer to family and enjoyed worshipping at St. Marks Lutheran Church, where their son Bruce served as Senior Pastor.

Survivors include his loving wife, Irene (Dokkestul) Lamont; brother Don (Raymonde) Lamont; daughter Karen (Lamont) Foster; son, Bruce (Mary Jo) Lamont; Grandchildren, Dr. Sarah Lamont; great grandson Brooks; Dr. Christine (Jordan) O’Brien, Matthew (Michelle) Foster, Johnny (Lauren) Coates; great-grandson, Luca; and Shelby Coates. In addition to many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; one sister Irene Welder, and one sister-in-law Laura (Lewiston) Dokkestul; also, two brothers-in-laws, Ray Welder and Gene Dokkestul; and their dear daughter Diane Lamont Real.

A Memorial Service will be held on November 28, 2026, at St. Marks Lutheran Church in Wausau at 5:00 pm. Pastor Eric Hauan will officiate. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until the time of service at the church. A private internment will be at Rest Haven Cemetery in the town of Washington (near Eau Claire) at a later date.

Robert was dearly loved by his family, friends, and students. He will be remembered for his love of The Lord, his family, and music, which he shared with his church family and his devotion to choral music in the public school system for 32 years. He also loved Shelties and is survived by his faithful dog Mitzie.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Lutheran Hour Ministries, Camp Luther, or St. Marks Lutheran Church.
