Russell (Mickey) Soukup was born in Wausau in 1937 to Joseph and Ester (Graveen). He was one of seven siblings. Two of his brothers, Jerry and Wayne, survive him. Mickey joined the Army at 17. As part of his six years of service, Mickey deployed to Germany where he worked as a military police officer. When he returned, Mickey married and had two children, both surviving him: Julie Stevenson and Rachelle (Shelley) Soukup. Mickey spent his working years at Marathon Electric. Legend has it that the job was given to him initially to settle a poker debt between Mick's father and the owner of the company. It was from there he retired. Mick was a nature lover, a hunter, and in his younger years, a somewhat notorious pool shark. Mickey took great pride in his sobriety. With the help of Alcoholics Anonymous, he celebrated 38 years just days before he passed. Through his commitment to the program, Mickey inspired and supported many people on their own path of recovery. He is quite a legend at 'the club'. Outside of his time with the club, Mickey spent most of his time on his land, which he cared for independently until the day he passed. On any given afternoon, Mickey could be found, coffee cup in hand, cowboy hat on, overlooking his pond, and quietly absorbing the world around him. For his last few years, he lived with his nephew Todd (Cori) Soukup. There he was well-loved and cared for. Mickey passed quietly from this world to the next on Thursday, March 10th. He was at home resting peacefully in his favorite recliner. He will be missed by many.
